Cassey Watson was testing June 4th and 5th at Castle Comb On June 4th she did 17 flying laps in one session. Although it was basically the shake down run things felt pretty good with the car. The team asked for a 1.23 by the end of the day, however she managed a 1.18.62 in those few flying laps, plus the times were very consistent, so everyone was all very happy.
Very quickly in the run it became noticeable the car had too much grip on the front, so she came in for a set-up change, working with the team they came up with a set up and she took to the track again. In the first half of the lap the car felt much better almost a different car, unfortunately as she came down the back straight the car started filling with smoke so she came back to the pits. They found the smoke was from gearbox oil leaking onto the exhaust. At first They thought it was the drive shaft seal, unfortunately though it turned out to be the Diff bearing. The team were absolutely superb with all the students stripping the car. They removed the gearbox and split it and then they set off to find a new bearing and press. Unfortunately that took quite some time so it was 15:50 when we got back. The students had the car back together and ready to go by 17:00. It was a real shame for them that it was too late to go out on track again. However the circuit have given them permission to run the car the next day at a track day. That day not only did it run faultlessly there was not even the smallest oil leak or anything. Well done team!!Anyway onto today, obviously being a track day they weren't timing and with slower traffic on track hard through most of the day to get fully clear laps anyway, but there goal was to fine tune the set up so the car was handling as well as possible. Lunar achieved a lot today the car got better and better and we have certainly got rid of any handling characteristics that could lose us time. However Cassey believe the car would be even quicker if they could liven up the back end and have it moving around more. They have a plan for this but don't currently have the ability to do this accurately at the track at the moment but watch this space. |
