With the protracted marriage between Shanghai Automotive and MG owner NAC finally complete, MG now has the resources to begin the development of its new models. With SAIC’s Roewe brand having recently launched the British designed and developed 550 model, focus is now shifting to what will be coming next for MG.
Rumours of a MG variant of the 550 have been widespread, and the model has recently been launched in Chile, with MG badge hastily replacing the Roewe nameplate.

The Roewe 550, albeit badged as an MG, ready for it’s Chilean launch.
The 550 will also be joined in Chile by the Roewe 750, (formerly the Rover 75, MG ZT) again with MG badging and Chinese built TF roadsters. There is also increased speculation that the 550 might see a UK, or at least European launch in 2009 with it recently being spotted under-going UK testing.
New ZS due in 2009

News of true ZS successor came late this week with a Chinese announcement of a new ‘A-class’ 1.5 turbo-charged cars, the MG 5 and MG 6. The six is widely expected to be closely based on the 550, with the 5 expected to share the 550’s platform, in a shortened, hatchback variety. Chinese site Auto-sina reported (via Google translation) ‘MG will be launched in the year after MG5, positioning models will be in the range of MG6 and MG3, will be equipped with two 1.5L and 1.6L engine, is expected in the market price of 100,000 yuan or so. The planned listing in 2010 of the MPV will use Ssangyong technology.’

The new SV convertible-will it see the road wearing an octagon?
The Birmingham Post reported this week (http://www.birminghammail.net/news/birmingham-news/2008/10/23/court-battle-over-car-badge-rights-97319-22100082/) that NAC-MG have begun legal proceedings against William Riley and his intention to relaunch the MG super-car, the SV. Mr Riley intends to bring the Peter Steven’s styled car back to the market-place, including a new convertible variant for between £75,000 and £90,000. However NAC have become increasingly displeased with Mr Riley’s use of the MG and X Power name. With Mr Riley sticking to his guns and confident of his rights to use the X-Power name, this is a fight that could run and run.
